Winter Camp was held at the Oriental Martial Arts College over this last weekend, January 20th through January 22nd. The theme was competition, with special classes on sparring, ring stats, and judging. The highlight of the weekend was the traditional Big Bow, in which all students showed respect for each other, rank by rank. Nearly 100 students attended the Winter Camp and Big Bow, from Ohio, surrounding states, and as far as New York.

All the Attendees of the Big Bow

Friday night featured classes on Gumdo, Long Staff, and Moogongryu basics, as well as a session in instructor training led by Master Paul Korchak from Cincinnati. With a background in education and years of martial arts training, Master Korchak shared the curriculum he uses for his student instructors in Cincinnati. The six month instructor training was distilled down to two three hour sessions. The class was part lecture, part hands-on experience, with campers serving as guinea pigs, or rather, students, for the exercises. Master Korchak promises to teach more at upcoming camps.

Saturday morning classes included sessions on Kukkiwon Pommsae, led by Rick Davis. Afterwards there were classes on sparring, ring stats, and coaching, including use of the LaJust scoring system, led by MooSung Choi, Kathy Rhineheart, and Steve Potter. Concurrently, other students participated in Kimoodo and board breaking classes.

Traditional Feast

Afterwards, Grand Master Choi presided over the annual Big Bow. During the Big Bow, each rank of students from Master to white belt bow in turn to all higher ranks until every student has bowed to all others. This ceremony is a sign of respect that all students of Grand Master Choi feel for each other. As each rank bowed, Grand Master Choi bestowed his blessing for the coming Year of the Black Dragon. One such blessing was given to 2nd Dan Black Belt and newlywed Rachel Thurston for many babies in the coming year. Rachel respectfully declined that particular blessing.

Master Kuns Instructs in Hapkido

Following the big bow was a traditional Korean meal, prepared by Mrs. Choi. The food was spectacular.

The afternoon sessions included classes on Kimoodo, Gumdo, and Long Staff. In addition, Master Mikhail Kuns from New York taught a class on Hapkido.

Sunday, the students participated in a demostration competition, combining all their newly-learned skills in a three minute group demo. The Black Dragons barely edged Rachel's Raiders to take first place in the competition. Afterwards Winter Camp was concluded with pictures and good byes!
